ARTICLE. According to Vladímir Ilich Uliánov, alias Vladimir Lenin – first Russian and Soviet revolutionary prime minister, from 1917 to 1927 – ”when the division of the world market between capitalist countries has already taken place, we already are in the stage of Imperialism, last capitalist phase, the stage of it’s decay and degeneration.” A phase we can easlily recognize as our time. Lenin typified it in his illuminating 1916 work Imperialism the Highest Stage of Capitalism by the following characteristics:

1 Formation of monopolies between different organizations (cartels, trade unions, trusts).

2 Stuggle against the indipendent and negation of free competition.

3 Merger of industrial and bank capital, that is to say formation of the financial capital.

4 Fusion of the financial capital with the State, therefore between banks, industries and political power.

5 Exportation of capital and with this means economic penetration into semicolonial countries; ( In order to control the resources).

6 Division of the world by capitalist countries and recurring imperialistic wars in order to change – due to the different capitalist development, by which some capitalist countries are growing while others are in stagnation – the sharing of the existing world.

”In this time period, capitalism necessarily and definitively enters into decay and degenerates”, wrote Lenin: ”it obstructs production (by different kinds of limitations, huge crisis, devastation produced by wars), sharpens class struggles (enduring unemployment, worsening of workers conditions, increasing of the exploitation…), and causes ruin through wars.

Is it not a rather precise portrait of today’s world?

Vladimir Lenin died in 1924 after a fast physical deterioration. On May the 25th, 1922, Lenin had a stroke from which he recovered few months later. On the 16th of December he had a second one. Seven days later he recovered strength and lucidity, though his condition progressively worsened. Since May 6, 1923, he was not able to talk and rapidly deteriorated into a complete paralysis. He died on January 21, 1924. Among the different theories about his death, there is also a probable poisoning carried out by Iosif Stalin, who became his successor, despite, it seems, Lenin, would had preferred Leon Trotsky for such a role. The latter was killed in Mexico in 1940 by a wealthy man from Catalonia, the stalinist agent Ramón Mercader. Inside Trotsky’s heavily guarded coumpounds in Mexico City, the 27 year-old Mercader stuck an ice axe into Trosky’s head. Trosky lost his life the next day.

Years later, Mercader was awarded the title of Hero by the Soviet Union.
